Developer FAQ

Questions about installation, licensing, APIs and local execution.

Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. Koder has no cloud account. Settings → Account and profile shows that status.

Is Koder free?

Basic local use of the desktop app is free for personal activity and authorized internal organizational work. New CLI distributions under Koder-EULA-1.1 are free for personal, noncommercial use; commercial use, paid client work and organizational deployment require separate written authorization. You pay model providers directly.

What does the public API do today?

You can read the guide and submit a login or SDK access request. Authorization and token exchange are not open.

Is an application receipt a token?

No. It is only a receipt.

Can Koder desktop read keys from .env?

No. Enter them in Settings → Models. The SDK can use KODER_API_KEY and other environment variables.

Can the SDK run on its own?

No. It needs a locally installed Koder CLI and runtime.

Are the KARMENBOT terminal and phone apps the same product?

No. The phone app is not available for download.

Is Koder open source?

The SDK is MIT-licensed. KARMENBOT terminal source is GPL-3.0-only with a linking exception. The KARMENLOOP kernel and new Koder CLI application runtime source are proprietary.

Why did installation exit?

The installer needs you to enter accept. Without an interactive answer or prior acceptance, it exits. That is not a network error.
